One of the reasons I love the Art House Sketchbook Project is because it is completely open to any artist – from amateur to professional. The point is to participate. And it's so cheap – twenty-five bucks. What an incredible idea to massively archive work by thousands and thousands of living artists. Then, over 10,000 sketchbooks (or more) will tour the U.S. starting in April 2012 and once the tour is done, the sketchbooks will be permanently catalogued and available for viewing in the Brooklyn Art Library in New York.
So you sign up, pay your fee, and they send you a sketchbook. You pick a theme (from over 40 different themes) and create a sketchbook from that theme. But you're not just limited to pencil and paper. You can even have pages pop out – just make sure that sketchbook folds back down to the standard size: 1 x 5.25 x 7.25 inches. How awesome and simple is that!?
If you have extra cash, you can pay $20 and digitize your work and make it viewable to the online world.
The deadline to register to participate in the 2012 Sketchbook Project is October 31, 2011. Sketchbooks need to be postmarked and sent in the mail back to Art House by January 31, 2012.
The tour: Brooklyn, NY; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; San Francisco, CA; Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Los Angeles, CA; Philadelphia, PA; Portland, OR; Portland, ME; London, England; Melbourne, Australia; Vancouver, Canada; Toronto, Canada.
